US high school shooter 'injures seven students'

Jaylen Fryberg, a student at Marysville Pilchuck High School is in lockdown, opened fire in the school cafeteria before turning the gun on himself

A teenage boy has opened fire on fellow students gathered in a cafeteria at a high school in Washington state, injuring several, before taking his own life with his weapon.

Named locally as Jaylen Ray Fryberg, the 15-year-old entered Marysville-Pilchuck High School on Tuesday morning, shooting students in the cafeteria before opening fire outside.

As many as six people were reported to have been injured, including one with a bullet wound to the head.

Survivors described the terror as he sprayed bullets around the lunch room at about 10.45 am local time while about 50 children and staff were in the room. “There was blood everywhere,” said a student who called emergency services from inside the cafeteria.

Police who searched the school facility room by room with guns drawn found small groups of terrified children and teachers huddled in cupboards, bathrooms and behind barricaded doors.

Officers said they were “confident” that the dead boy had acted alone.

Parents were asked to go to a nearby church that was set up as an emergency evacuation centre. Children were bused there to be accounted for before emotional reunions with family.

Four victims, two young females and two young males, arrived at Providence Regional Hospital with gunshot wounds. Three had gunshot wounds to the head and are in critical condition. The fourth victim, a 14-year-old boy, was transferred to another hospital in Seattle where he is in intensive care in serious condition.

Fryberg, who was Native American, was said by fellow students to be popular - a member of the football and wrestling teams and the Homecoming Prince, who had recently had some trouble with a girlfriend.

Jordan Luton, a freshman student in the same year, said: “A couple of people he shot were friends. He was fine - at football practice yesterday. He went after his friends, who were sitting at a certain table.”

His cousin, 16-year-old Heaven Arbuckle, told the Telegraph the shooting was over a girl, "he was heartbroken and didn't know what to do Jaylen wasn't a bad kid he just made a mistake."

She said Fryberg shot their other cousins - one of whom was well, the other's condition was not known.

The shooting comes nearly two years after America’s worst school shooting at Newtown, Connecticut, when 20 children and six staff were killed by a lone gunman.

It also came with North America already on edge this week after the murders of two Canadian soldiers by Muslim converts and an axe attack on four policemen in New York.
